Parfumeur | Dorothée Piot
1885 Bains Sulfureux by Les Bains Guerbois is an amber, aromatic and floral eau de parfum, unisex, created by Dorothée Piot. The founding date of the entire collection.
A single address, one hundred and forty years of history
It all started at 7 rue du Bourg-l'Abbé, in Paris. In 1885, Auguste Guerbois opened the capital's most luxurious private bathhouse, which was soon frequented by Manet, Monet, Renoir, Zola and Proust — the family also owned the famous Café Guerbois, a haunt for painters and writers. In 1978, the venue became Les Bains Douches, the Parisian equivalent of Studio 54, for a quarter of a century. In 2015, Jean-Pierre Marois, a film producer and heir to the venue, transformed it into a five-star hotel, then revived the perfume house in 2016. The catalogue follows two lines: "A date, a story" (2018), where each perfume corresponds to a specific year of the venue, and "Forms & Materials" (2022), which explores the building itself. The compositions are signed by great noses: Dorothée Piot, Michel Almairac, Bertrand Duchaufour, Dominique Ropion, Jérôme Épinette, Fanny Bal, Mathieu Nardin.
An opening of mandarin and rosemary
The mandarin opens with round citrus, the rosemary brings camphorous and resinous herbs, the blackcurrant a dark acidity. Rosemary is not decorative: it is the herb of the steam rooms, the one thrown on the hot stones.
A heart of orange blossom and jasmine
The orange blossom and the jasmine establish two white flowers, honeyed for one, indolic for the other. It is the scent of the soaps and oils of a 19th-century bathhouse.
A base of incense, benzoin and tonka bean
The incense brings resin and smoke, the benzoin its balsamic vanilla, the tonka bean almond and cut hay. A warm and woody base, like the damp wooden cabins.
The house's signature
Rosemary and incense recreate a place, not a mood. The hot water, the steam, the wood of the cabins and the resins burned there: the composition starts from a specific place at a specific date. 1885 is the year Auguste Guerbois opened his establishment — it is the starting point of the entire collection, and the only perfume that tells the story of the place at its birth. A sculpted Bacchus has been watching over the entrance since that year.
For whom, for what occasions?
Amber, aromatic and floral, this eau de parfum is for those who love aromatic ambers and are looking for a perfume that tells a verifiable story. All year round, by day as well as by night. It is the perfume that opens the collection.
With 1885 Bains Sulfureux Les Bains Guerbois, a specific year becomes a formula.
