Parfumeur | Jérôme Epinette
1900 L'Heure de Proust by Les Bains Guerbois is a citrusy, fruity and gourmand eau de parfum, unisex, created by Jérôme Épinette. Marcel Proust was indeed a customer of the establishment.
A single address, one hundred and forty years of history
It all started at 7 rue du Bourg-l'Abbé, in Paris. In 1885, Auguste Guerbois opened the capital's most luxurious private bath, which was immediately frequented by Manet, Monet, Renoir, Zola and Proust — the family also ran the famous Café Guerbois, a haunt for painters and writers. In 1978, the venue became Les Bains Douches, the Parisian equivalent of Studio 54. In 2015, Jean-Pierre Marois, film producer and heir to the premises, transformed it into a five-star hotel, then revived the perfume house in 2016. The catalogue follows two lines: "A date, a story" (2018), where each perfume corresponds to a specific year of the venue, and "Forms & Materials" (2022), which explores the building itself. The compositions are signed by great noses: Dorothée Piot, Michel Almairac, Bertrand Duchaufour, Dominique Ropion, Jérôme Épinette, Fanny Bal, Mathieu Nardin.
An opening of bergamot, grapefruit and blueberry
Bergamot and grapefruit open with two citrus fruits, one floral, the other bitter. Blueberry brings a dark and sweet fruit, unusual in a citrus opening.
A heart of black tea and Tuscan leather
Violet lays down its powder, the black tea accord its bitter tannin — the cup of tea time. And the Tuscan leather accord arrives underneath: the supple leather of armchairs and bindings, that of a living room rather than a saddle.
A base of praline, guaiac and vanilla
The praline accord brings caramelized almond, vanilla sweetness, guaiac wood a dry smoke that prevents the whole from becoming a snack. The pastry and the armchair, in the same accord.
The house's gesture
Tea and praline under a leather: it's the madeleine, but in the decor. Proust actually frequented the Guerbois baths, and 1900 corresponds to the golden age of the establishment. The composition therefore does not merely quote the writer: it reconstructs the precise moment he made famous — the snack, the cup, and the room around it.
For whom, for what occasions?
Citrusy, fruity and gourmand, this eau de parfum is for those who love teas and soft leathers, and seek a gourmand that remains elegant. From autumn to winter, by day as well as by evening. It is the most literary in the catalogue.
With 1900 L'Heure de Proust Les Bains Guerbois, the writer is not quoted, he is located.
