Parfumeur | Dominique Ropion
1979 New Wave by Les Bains Guerbois is an oriental, powdery, woody eau de parfum, unisex, created by Dominique Ropion. Iris concrete at the heart, the richest form of the material.
One address, one hundred and forty years of history
It all started at 7 rue du Bourg-l'Abbé, in Paris. In 1885, Auguste Guerbois opened the capital's most luxurious private bathhouse, which was soon frequented by Manet, Monet, Renoir, Zola and Proust. In 1978, the venue became Les Bains Douches, the Parisian equivalent of Studio 54. In 2015, Jean-Pierre Marois, a film producer and heir to the venue, transformed it into a five-star hotel, then revived the perfume house in 2016. The catalogue follows two lines: "A date, a story" (2018), where each perfume corresponds to a specific year of the venue, and "Forms & Materials" (2022), which explores the building itself. The compositions are signed by great noses: Dorothée Piot, Michel Almairac, Bertrand Duchaufour, Dominique Ropion, Jérôme Épinette, Fanny Bal, Mathieu Nardin.
An opening of two mints and aldehydes
Spearmint and peppermint open together: the first sweet and herbaceous, the second cold and spicy. The aldehydes add their soapy and metallic sparkle. An icy start, very unusual.
An iris concrete heart
Iris concrete occupies the heart with Virginia cedar. Concrete is the richest and most expensive form of iris — the paste obtained before the butter, still laden with waxes. It gives a thick, buttery powder that the absolute alone does not achieve.
A base of Australian sandalwood and amber wood
Australian sandalwood brings its milky creaminess, amber wood dry warmth, musk longevity on the skin. The base finally warms up a composition that has remained cold throughout its entire journey.
The house's signature
Two mints at the top, an iris concrete at the heart: the contrast is extreme. The vegetal cold on one side, the greasy powder on the other — two materials that have no reason to meet. And the mention of concrete rather than just iris is a signal of quality: it is one of the most expensive materials in perfumery, and the formula specifies which one it uses.
For whom, for what occasions?
Oriental, powdery and woody, this eau de parfum is for those who love powdery irises and fresh openings, and are looking for a composition that surprises. All year round, by day as well as by evening. It is the most contrasting in the catalogue.
With 1979 New Wave Les Bains Guerbois, the sharpest cold precedes the greasiest powder.
