Parfumeur | Bertrand Duchaufour
1986 Éclectique by Les Bains Guerbois is a fruity, gourmand, and woody unisex eau de parfum, created by Bertrand Duchaufour. Honey between geranium and leather.
A single address, one hundred and forty years of history
It all began at 7 rue du Bourg-l'Abbé, in Paris. In 1885, Auguste Guerbois opened the capital's most luxurious private bath, which was soon frequented by Manet, Monet, Renoir, Zola, and Proust. In 1978, the venue became Les Bains Douches, the Parisian equivalent of Studio 54. In 2015, Jean-Pierre Marois, a film producer and heir to the venue, transformed it into a five-star hotel, then revived the perfume house in 2016. The catalog follows two lines: "A Date, a Story" (2018), where each perfume corresponds to a specific year in the venue's history, and "Forms & Materials" (2022), which explores the building itself. The compositions are signed by master perfumers: Dorothée Piot, Michel Almairac, Bertrand Duchaufour, Dominique Ropion, Jérôme Épinette, Fanny Bal, Mathieu Nardin.
An opening of yellow mandarin and cardamom
Yellow mandarin opens with a citrus note that is greener and more tart than ripe mandarin. Cardamom brings its camphoraceous freshness, while davana adds its fruity, slightly rum-like facet.
A heart of geranium, honey, and leather
Geranium brings its green, rosy blossom, while the leather accord provides the dark material. Between the two is honey — waxy sugar, slightly animalic in its most pronounced facets.
A base of tobacco, patchouli, and amber
Tobacco brings dried leaf, patchouli damp earth, and amber balsamic warmth. A warm, enveloping base that extends the density of the heart.
The house's signature
Honey is placed exactly between a flower and leather. It is a two-sided material: sweet on one side, frankly animalic on the other. Placed there, it links two registers that are usually unrelated — floral and leathery — and makes the perfume simultaneously gourmand, floral, and animalic. The name says exactly that: eclectic, in the literal sense.
For whom, for what occasions?
Fruity, gourmand, and woody, this eau de parfum is for those who love honey and leather, and are looking for a perfume that refuses to be categorized. From autumn to winter, for evening wear. It is the most animalic in the catalog.
With 1986 Éclectique Les Bains Guerbois, a single material links floral and leathery.
