Parfumeur | Dominique Ropion
1992 Purple Night by Les Bains Guerbois is a floral, woody and citrusy unisex eau de parfum, created by Dominique Ropion. Two white flowers named for their origin, on suede and tobacco.
One address, one hundred and forty years of history
It all started at 7 rue du Bourg-l'Abbé, in Paris. In 1885, Auguste Guerbois opened the capital's most luxurious private bath, which was immediately frequented by Manet, Monet, Renoir, Zola and Proust. In 1978, the venue became Les Bains Douches, the Parisian equivalent of Studio 54. In 2015, Jean-Pierre Marois, a film producer and heir to the venue, transformed it into a five-star hotel, before reviving the perfume house in 2016. The catalogue follows two lines: "A Date, a Story" (2018), where each perfume corresponds to a specific year in the venue's history, and "Forms & Materials" (2022), which explores the building itself. The compositions are signed by master perfumers: Dorothée Piot, Michel Almairac, Bertrand Duchaufour, Dominique Ropion, Jérôme Épinette, Fanny Bal, Mathieu Nardin.
A Calabrian mandarin opening
Calabrian mandarin opens the composition alone. The provenance is not merely decorative: Calabrian citrus fruits are renowned for an essential oil that is denser and more floral than that of other terroirs.
A heart of Indian tuberose and Egyptian jasmine
Indian tuberose and Egyptian jasmine hold the heart between them. The former is fleshy, almost metallic; the latter, more indolic and more animalic than Grasse jasmines. Two white flowers in full bloom.
A base of suede, tobacco and Indonesian patchouli
The suede accord brings velvety, powdery leather; the tobacco accord, dried leaf; Indonesian patchouli, damp earth. The base is dark, and it boldly contradicts the brightness of the heart.
The house's signature
Each material is named for its origin, and the white flowers are set on leather. Calabrian mandarin, Indian tuberose, Egyptian jasmine, Indonesian patchouli: the formula indicates where its ingredients come from, which is a rare sourcing signal. And the contrast is direct—two sun-drenched flowers right on top of a base of suede and tobacco, where logic would suggest a light woody base.
For whom, for what occasions?
Floral, woody and citrusy, this eau de parfum is for those who love white flowers and powdery leathers, and are looking for a floral with depth. From autumn to winter, for evening wear. It is the darkest in the catalogue.
With 1992 Purple Night Les Bains Guerbois, the formula states where each material comes from.
