Parfumeur | Dmitry Bortnikov
Amber Cologne by Bortnikoff is a niche citrus, floral, and amber eau de parfum, unisex, created by Dmitry Bortnikov. Released in 2019, it is one of the house's founding fragrances.
A Thai house where the founder is also the perfumer
Bortnikoff is based in Thailand, in the heart of the agarwood-producing regions. It was founded by Dmitry Bortnikov, a Russian perfumer who is both the owner and the nose of his brand, and who works with wild Thai ouds, sourcing his materials at the source. The catalog is divided into four lines: Entry Level, Main Collection, Colognes and Attars. At this house, the word "cologne" means neither light nor fleeting: it refers to a fresh eau de parfum crafted with the same rare materials as its ouds. 50 ml bottle.
An opening of six citrus fruits and spices
Bergamot, lemon, white and pink grapefruit, and sweet orange open up in the bright sunshine. Cardamom adds a fresh spice, while frangipani adds a milky white flower from the start.
A heart of jasmine sambac, Virginia cedarwood, and Indian sandalwood
Jasmine sambac, the variety picked in the evening and the most sensual of jasmines, settles in the center. Virginia cedarwood brings its dry pencil-like quality, while Indian sandalwood brings its creamy, milky texture.
A base of ambergris, two ouds, and vanilla
Ambergris leaves its mineral and salty facet. Then come Sri Lankan oud and Bouya oud, dosed with restraint, and vanilla, which rounds out the whole. The sillage remains close to the skin.
The house's signature touch
The name is deliberately misleading. You expect amber; you find a citrus floral. Ambergris does not dominate the composition, it anchors it — it is the grain of salt that gives body to the citrus juice. The real signature touch lies elsewhere: two distinct ouds, from Sri Lanka and Bouya, are placed in a fresh eau de parfum. Putting agarwood, the heaviest and most expensive material in perfumery, in the lightest possible format, is a deliberate contradiction — and that is exactly what the house means by "cologne": the depth that a fresh style can contain when given real materials.
For whom, for what occasions?
Citrus, floral, and amber, this eau de parfum is for those who love fresh fragrances and usually find them too simple. It gives its best from spring to summer, during the day, and is equally suitable for women and men.
With Amber Cologne Bortnikoff, Dmitry Bortnikov blends ambergris and two ouds into a citrus fragrance.
