Parfumeur | Rania Jouaneh
Ambre Loup by Rania J is a unisex spicy woody amber eau de parfum, created by Rania Jouaneh. The house describes it as its first major success, the one that defined its olfactory identity.
A perfumer who came late to the craft, the granddaughter of a spice merchant
Rania J is the house of Rania Jouaneh, who is both its founder and nose. Her journey can be summarized in a few facts she tells herself: the granddaughter of a Middle Eastern spice merchant and the daughter of an entrepreneurial father, she grew up between Jordan, Morocco, and France. She did not enter perfumery through the usual path: at thirty-nine, after a career in entirely different fields, she followed a childhood passion and enrolled in the Cinquième Sens school in Paris. Her approach can be summed up in one sentence of her own: “I put my whole self into my creations. My perfumes are my way of connecting with others, where the olfactory experience invites us to explore light and shadow, the mystery of the unknown.”
An opening of clove and spices
Clove opens with its warm, almost medicinal eugenol, surrounded by dry spices. There is no citrus or freshness: the perfume enters through warmth, which is rare and explains its immediately recognizable character.
A heart of Peru balsam, labdanum absolute, and vanilla absolute
Peru balsam and labdanum absolute form the heart of the perfume—the house describes their notes as woody, dry, and rough. It is this roughness that sets Ambre Loup apart from comforting ambers. Vanilla absolute then arrives and softens, without ever becoming sweet.
A base of agarwood, guaiac wood, and cedarwood
Agarwood brings its animalic depth, guaiac wood its almost tar-like smokiness, and cedarwood its pencil-like dryness. Three woods and nothing else: the base does not seek to round off what the heart has laid down.
The house's signature
The perfumer opens this fragrance with clove, that is, with a spice—a choice that is no coincidence for someone who presents herself as the granddaughter of a spice merchant. She herself describes the opening as gourmand and animalic, and its base as dry and rough: the formula embraces being uncomfortable before being enveloping. It is this fragrance, she says, that was the turning point for her brand.
For whom, and for what occasions?
For those who love ambers and want them resinous and dry rather than vanilla-scented. It is an autumn and winter fragrance, preferably for the evening, with long-lasting wear and a pronounced trail. Ambre Loup Rania J will appeal to those seeking an amber that scratches a little. Available in 50 and 100 ml.
