New Notes is an Italian house published by HIC BEAUTY, in San Giuliano Milanese, on the outskirts of Milan. It describes itself as “a new generation of perfume extracts that transcends the codes of perfumery and breaks down the boundaries of role and gender,” and it lives up to the formula to the letter: its entire catalog consists of perfume extracts, without a single eau de parfum. The house does not credit any perfumer on its bottles.

An opening of vanilla flower and caramel

The opening is surprising: vanilla flower, not the pod. It is a green, slightly waxy and floral note, that of the orchid before it bears fruit. Caramel follows immediately, cooked and buttery. The fragrance thus announces its subject through its flower rather than its fruit.

A heart of frangipane, cotton candy and dulce de leche

The heart is frankly gourmand and does not hide it. Frangipane brings its cooked almond, cotton candy its spun sugar, and dulce de leche—the South American milk jam—its caramelized milky note. White flowers step back to prevent cloyingness.

A base of vanilla beans, tonka bean absolute and musk

Vanilla returns, as beans this time: the pod itself, rich and balsamic, where the opening had only given the flower. Tonka bean absolute brings its almond-like coumarin and musk the skin effect. As an extract, this base lasts a very long time.

Caramelo Vanilla uses the same plant at two stages of its life: vanilla flower in the opening, vanilla beans in the base. It is not a repetition but a cycle—the formula makes its subject grow from beginning to end.
