Adhara Oud by Cherigan is a niche woody, leathery, and floral parfum extract, unisex, with 98% natural ingredients.
A 1929 house risen from the dead
Cherigan was founded in 1929, at 120 avenue des Champs-Élysées. Its name already tells of its era: chéri and gant, back when people still perfumed the skin of their gloves. The house opened a boutique in Havana, charmed film stars, created about fifteen fragrances—including a Chance long before Chanel, in a horseshoe-shaped bottle—then disappeared around 1966. Luc Gabriel, CEO of The Different Company, rediscovered it in 2016 in the perfume archives, bought back the name and relaunched the house in 2021, in the spirit of Roaring Twenties Art Deco. The catalog is divided into two ranges: Les Iconiques, reconstructed original formulas, and Inspirations, new creations born from the spirit of the era. Everything is a parfum extract, with between 90 and 99% natural ingredients, in 100 ml and 15 ml sizes.
An opening of citrus and saffron
Citrus briefly illuminates the opening, immediately joined by saffron, leathery and slightly metallic. The leathery facet therefore arrives from the very first second, even before the wood.
A heart of rose absolute and geranium
Rose absolute unfolds, honeyed and fleshy, while geranium brings its green and rosy facet, preventing it from becoming syrupy.
A base of leathery notes, oud accord, and patchouli
The leathery notes extend what the saffron heralded, the oud accord brings its woody depth and patchouli its dark earthiness. The trail is dense and very long-lasting.
The house's approach
98% natural ingredients in an oud is almost a technical contradiction. The oud register is precisely where synthetics dominate, because they allow a rare material to be reproduced at a controlled cost. Choosing natural ingredients here is a costly choice, and this fragrance sits at the very top of the house's range, just behind Or des Îles. Second point: the subject is not the wood alone, it is the marriage of rose and oud, with saffron placed at the top to bring the leathery facet from the start. Result: a rosy oud, not a raw oud—a Western interpretation of an oriental accord, which corresponds exactly to a Parisian house on the Champs-Élysées.
For whom, for what occasions?
Woody, leathery, and floral, this extract is for those seeking an oud carried by rose rather than a raw wood. It gives its best from autumn to winter, in the evening, worn equally well by women and men. The 15 ml size has an applicator cap, without a spray: application is done drop by drop, and the bottle is refilled each time it is closed.
With Adhara Oud Cherigan, the house marries agarwood to rose rather than to smoke.
