Parfumeur | Maxime Exler
Shanghai Le Soir by Cherigan is a niche floral, fruity, and powdery perfume extract, unisex, created by Maxime Exler — the only fragrance in the collection whose perfumer is named.
A 1929 house risen from the dead
Cherigan was founded in 1929, at 120 avenue des Champs-Élysées. Its name already speaks of its era: chéri and gant, back when gloves were still perfumed. International from the very beginning — with a boutique in Havana as early as the 1930s —, it created about fifteen fragrances, including a Chance long before Chanel, before disappearing around 1966. Luc Gabriel, CEO of The Different Company, rediscovered it in 2016 in the perfume archives, bought back the name and relaunched the house in 2021, in the spirit of Roaring Twenties Art Deco. After Cuba, the nights of Shanghai. 100 ml bottle.
An opening of pink pepper, lychee, and blackcurrant
Pink pepper opens bright and slightly fruity, lychee brings its juicy and floral flesh, and blackcurrant its budding bite. A sparkling and clean start.
A heart of rose, violet, iris, and cedarwood
Rose unfolds, full and honeyed. Violet and iris surround it with their two powders — one green and sweet, the other cool and buttery — while cedarwood lays the first framework.
A base of white musk, cashmere wood, and woody notes
White musk creates the skin effect, cashmere wood a velvety and musky texture, and the woody notes a discreet dryness. The sillage remains soft and lasts a long time.
The house's signature
This is the only fragrance in the collection whose perfumer is named. Cherigan refuses as a matter of principle to credit its perfumers — "in the 1920s and 1930s, no one cared, they were artisans working in a laboratory". The noses of the collection therefore remain anonymous; Maxime Exler, from Mane Chine, is the exception. His composition layers violet and iris, the two powders of perfumery, behind a juicy lychee: a soft floral hidden under a sparkling opening. This is exactly what the title says — a city that sparkles on the surface and softens when night falls.
For whom, for what occasions?
Floral, fruity, and powdery, this extract is for those looking for a fruity rose without heaviness. It can be worn all year round, from day to night, by both women and men.
With Shanghai Le Soir Cherigan, the house hides a powdery floral under a sparkling fruit.
