Parfumeur | Fanny Bal
Damier by Les Bains Guerbois is a spicy, musky, and lactonic unisex eau de parfum, created by Fanny Bal. The black-and-white tiling of Les Bains, translated into a fragrance.
A single address, one hundred and forty years of history
It all began at 7 rue du Bourg-l'Abbé in Paris. In 1885, Auguste Guerbois opened the capital's most luxurious private bath, frequented by Manet, Monet, Renoir, Zola, and Proust. In 1978, the venue became Les Bains Douches, the Parisian equivalent of Studio 54. In 2015, the heir to the venue, Jean-Pierre Marois, transformed it into a five-star hotel, before reviving the perfume house in 2016. The catalog follows two lines: "A Date, a Story" (2018), where each fragrance corresponds to a year in the venue's history, and "Forms & Materials" (2022), an exploration of the building itself. Damier belongs to this second collection, and it is the creation that best illustrates its concept.
An opening of two peppers and aldehydes
Madagascar black pepper brings a dry bite, while pink pepper adds a livelier, resinous berry note. The aldehydes add their soapy, metallic sparkle. A decidedly dark and sharp opening.
A heart of lactonic accord and jasmine
The lactonic accord arrives in total contrast: soft, white, and creamy. Jasmine accompanies it with a fleshy floral note. The fragrance moves from black to white in a single transition, without a gradient.
A base of New Caledonian sandalwood and Indonesian patchouli
New Caledonian sandalwood — one of the creamiest and rarest — brings a woody lactonic note, Indonesian patchouli adds earthiness, and white musk provides longevity on the skin.
The house's signature
The fragrance is constructed like the establishment's floor: a dark tile, a light tile. The peppers and aldehydes form the black tile, the lactonic accord the white tile — and the transition between the two is sharp, without a blend, exactly like a checkerboard floor. It is the historic tiling of Les Bains, and the fragrance literally translates it rather than merely evoking it.
For whom, and for what occasions?
Spicy, musky, and lactonic, this eau de parfum is for those who love spicy and lactonic accords and are looking for a fragrance with a clear structure. For any time of year, by day or by night. It is the most graphic fragrance in the catalog.
With Damier Les Bains Guerbois, a floor becomes an olfactory structure.
