A house that names its fragrances after their ingredients

Bohoboco is a Polish house based in Warsaw. It was founded in 2009 as a fashion brand by designers Michał Gilbert Lach and Kamil Owczarek. A first fragrance was released in 2012, before the collection was launched in 2016 — a project in which Lach, who had worked in hairdressing and makeup before turning to fashion design, says he found his true calling. The house's signature lies in its naming convention: each fragrance is simply named after two or three of its ingredients, without a story or character. Sea Salt Caramel, Vanilla Black Pepper, Wild Carrot Oud — and even provocatively, Magic Mushrooms or Polish Potatoes. The first compositions were created in Grasse, and the house has been awarded by the Fragrance Foundation UK, Vogue Beauty and Elle Style. Everything is available as a unisex 50 ml eau de parfum.

An opening of rose, sandalwood and rockrose

Rose opens boldly and magnetically, while sandalwood immediately provides a creamy texture and rockrose — the resin from the rockrose tree — adds its leathery bitterness. A dense opening, with no citrus to lighten it.

A heart of storax, incense and balsamic notes

Storax establishes its melted resin texture, incense its mineral smoke, and the balsamic notes envelop the whole. It is the house's darkest and most hypnotic heart.

A base of musk, amber, labdanum and leather

Musk takes center stage, enveloped in amber and labdanum. The leathery notes darken the trail and give it its texture. The sillage lasts between eight and ten hours.

The house's approach

A house that writes "synthetic" on its own fragrance pyramid. This is extremely rare: in the official list of notes, Bohoboco states in black and white that the musk and leathery notes are synthetic. Where most houses hide their molecules behind the names of flowers, this one embraces them — because the subject demands it: you cannot distill a vinyl record. The fragrance seeks the scent of black plastic, the groove, the industrial material, and it is chemistry that delivers it. The rest of the formula is a proudly declared play of opposites: leather shows the dark side of the world, rose its luminous side.
