A house born from Dhofar frankincense

OJAR is an Omani house founded by Sheikha Hind Bahwan. The name comes from HOJARI, the world's most renowned quality of olibanum, harvested in the mountains of Dhofar. The founder summarizes her project in one sentence: "OJAR is a fusion of East and West — I have brought together the best know-how from each region." The catalog is organized into six collections by material, three of which come from Oman — Dhofar frankincense, Jebel Akhdar rose, and Rustaq honey — complemented by sandalwood, musk, and oud. The formulas are entrusted to perfumers from around the world: Dalia Izem, Gaël Montero, Jordi Fernández, Michel Girard, Nanako Ogi.

An opening of elemi and rosewood

Two materials, one of which is rarely used. Elemi is a Philippine gum that is both lemony, peppery, and resinous — it gives the fragrance a brightness that it will not seek from a citrus. Rosewood immediately brings its woody and rosy sweetness: a wood that smells like a flower, hence its name.

A heart of frankincense, myrrh, and patchouli

The heart is the subject of the fragrance. Frankincense brings its dry and peppery gum, myrrh its balsamic and slightly medicinal bitterness — two resins obtained in the same way, by incision of the bark and harvesting of the dried tears. Patchouli lays its earth beneath the two and prevents the formula from floating.

A base of vanilla, musk, and ambergris

The dry down changes texture completely. Vanilla brings its fatty sweetness — the house calls it "the perfumers' gold" —, musk the skin effect, ambergris its mineral and salty warmth. This base rounds off the resins of the heart and gives the fragrance its longevity: it is what makes it wearable every day.

The house's signature

Three gums in the same formula is a lot: elemi in the top, frankincense and myrrh in the heart. The house itself speaks of three resinous treasures brought together. Each is harvested in the same way, by scoring the bark and letting the sap harden in the air, but each smells differently — lemony, peppery, bitter. The title refers to the color of this accumulation: a copper-colored frankincense, warm and metallic, where most frankincenses are gray and cold. The fragrance belongs to the house's Encens collection.
