Parfumeur | Nathalie Feisthauer
Énigma by Maison Sental is a unisex vanilla floral amber eau de parfum, created by Nathalie Feisthauer. Five absolutes are distributed between the heart and the base.
A fragrance that never fully reveals itself
Maison Sental is a young French house born, in its own words, “from the desire to transform the invisible into emotion,” blending family heritage with a quest for innovation. It prides itself on entirely handmade production: in its workshop, perfumers, master artisans, and bottle makers work together, and from the selection of raw materials to the bottling, every step is done by hand. Énigma, launched in 2025, is its only creation to date. It entrusted it to Nathalie Feisthauer, whose career is worth knowing: in 1983, she was the first intern admitted to the Roure de Grasse school without coming from a family of perfumers—at the time, the school only recruited from families in Grasse. This was followed by twenty-five years at Givaudan, then six at Symrise, before she founded her own laboratory in Montmartre, housed in a former art gallery.
An opening of saffron, apple, and orange
Saffron opens the fragrance with its leathery spice and slight bitterness; it is the most expensive raw material in the world by weight. Apple brings a tart crunch, while orange adds zest. An opening that hints at neither the floral nor the gourmand notes that follow.
A heart of Turkish rose, jasmine, and Tunisian orange blossom
Three absolutes call out to each other in the heart: the fleshy, jammy Turkish rose, the indolic and opulent jasmine absolute, and the radiant, honeyed Tunisian orange blossom. Coconut and peach soften them with milky and velvety fruity notes.
A base of Madagascar vanilla and tonka bean
The final two absolutes close the composition: deep Madagascar vanilla and almond-scented tonka bean. Cashmeran, Ambroxan, and amber woods provide projection and longevity, even more so on clothing than on the skin.
The house's signature
Five absolutes in a single formula, each named after its place of origin. An absolute is the most concentrated and expensive form of a raw material; most compositions contain one, sometimes two. This one contains five—three in the heart, two in the base—and the house even specifies their terroir: Turkey for the rose, Tunisia for the orange blossom, and Madagascar for the vanilla. This is why each material remains identifiable rather than blending together, and it is also what justifies the name: the fragrance is read in fragments rather than as a single block.
For whom, and for what occasions?
For those who love floral ambers and are looking for a fragrance that does not reveal itself on the first try. All year round, by day or by night. Énigma by Maison Sental is the house's only creation to date.
