Kohl, modesty, and two men from the world of luxury

Kajal Perfumes Paris was founded in 2012 by Moe Khalaf and Ibrahim Faris, and its first fragrance was released in 2014. Both come from the world of luxury: Ibrahim Faris started at nineteen in Jordan before becoming brand manager of the Al Tayer Group in Dubai; Moe Khalaf spent ten years at YSL Beauté, eventually heading the Saudi market, before becoming Middle East Regional Director at Estée Lauder. The name says it all: kajal refers to kohl in Indian culture and comes from the Arabic word khajal, meaning modesty. The house is based in Dubai, but its fragrances are mainly composed in France.

An opening of lavender and juniper berries

Lavender opens with its camphorous aromaticity, while bergamot, lemon and orange provide three citrus notes, and apple adds a tart fruitiness. The juniper berries — the ingredient that gives gin its flavour — provide a resinous, blue-hued bitterness.

A heart of nutmeg, clove and rose

Nutmeg, coriander and clove establish a warm spice, while jasmine and rose add floral notes. The heart is denser than the opening might lead you to expect.

A base of amber, vetiver and sandalwood

Amber provides balsamic warmth, vetiver dry, smoky earthiness, and sandalwood creaminess. Tonka bean and patchouli round off the fragrance with a long-lasting base.

The house's signature touch

Juniper berries, the key ingredient in gin, in the top notes. Rarely used in fine perfumery, this berry provides a highly distinctive resinous bitterness, giving the opening an almost medicinal sharpness where lavender and citrus alone would have resulted in just another aromatic cologne. The name makes the rest clear: Faris means the rider in Arabic.
