New Notes is an Italian house published by HIC BEAUTY, in San Giuliano Milanese, on the outskirts of Milan. It describes itself as “a new generation of perfume extracts that transcends the codes of perfumery and breaks down the boundaries of role and gender,” and it follows through on the formula to the letter: its entire catalog consists of perfume extracts, without a single eau de parfum. The house does not credit any perfumer on its bottles.

An opening of coconut, cinnamon coffee, and chocolate

Nothing comes to refresh the opening. Coconut, milk, vanilla, cinnamon coffee, caramel, and chocolate arrive together, six gourmand notes stacked from the very first second. The perfume does not prepare the listener; it embraces its subject immediately.

A heart of tobacco, olibanum, and juniper berries

This is where the perfume saves itself from becoming a dessert. Tobacco brings its dried leaf, olibanum its dry and smoky resin, and juniper berries their resinous bitterness. Tonka bean, caramelized notes, powdery notes, and woody notes bridge the gap with the opening.

A base of vanilla bean, vanilla powder, and sandalwood

Vanilla returns in two additional forms: the bean, rich and balsamic, and the powder, dry and sweet. With the one in the opening, the ingredient is therefore used three times in the same formula. Sandalwood, amber, and musk close the composition.

Two choices make Felina recognizable. First, the complete absence of citrus in the opening: six gourmand notes at the start, without the freshness that usually serves as a transition. Next, vanilla used three times, in the opening, then as a bean and powder in the base — an ingredient that is varied rather than repeated.
