Parfumeur | Asim Al Qassim
Gaya Green by Anfas is a fruity, milky, woody niche parfum extract, unisex, created by perfumer Asim Al Qassim. In Arabic, gaya means both nature and the ultimate goal.
A house where every fragrance starts with an Arabic word
Anfas (أنفاس) means “breaths” in Arabic, and the house’s theme is Arab hospitality—that way of welcoming guests that, according to its founder, is something you can breathe in the Emirates. It was founded in the United Arab Emirates by Asim Al Qassim, an architect by training and the first certified Emirati perfumer. His method is stated plainly: it starts with an Arabic word, traces back to the emotion it carries, and then translates that into a fragrance formula—perfumes that are not inspired by Arab culture, but made from it. His architect’s eye is evident in the bottle: the rim is adorned with palm leaves depicting the sun, a flower opens in the center of the cap like a gift presented on a tray, and each bottle features an Arabic engraving.
An opening of mango, pear, cardamom and anise
Mango opens, fleshy and sun-drenched, with the juicy tartness of fruit picked in the height of summer. Pear softens it, while cardamom and anise add a spicy freshness and a hint of licorice.
A heart of milk, licorice, oud and cedar
Milk arrives and changes everything: it envelops the fruit in a creamy, almost powdery roundness. Licorice provides a bitter contrast, while oud and cedar ground the fragrance in wood. This is the house’s most unexpected heart.
A base of sweet notes, amber, iris root and wood
Sweet notes and amber prolong the warmth, iris root adds its cool powderiness, and the woody notes bring the fragrance to a close. The trail is expansive and very long-lasting—as a parfum extract, Gaya Green is known to last all day.
The house’s signature touch
Milk paired with oud. Oriental perfumery usually combines agarwood with rose, saffron or amber—never with a milky note, which is considered too sweet and too Western. Anfas does exactly the opposite: the milk is placed at the heart, in direct contact with the oud, and it is this interplay that gives the fragrance its identity. The theme justifies it: gaya is growth under difficult conditions, like a mango ripening despite the heat of the Arabian sun. The sweetness of the fruit and milk was therefore needed against the hardness of the wood, not alongside it.
For whom and for what occasions?
Fruity, milky and woody, this parfum extract is for those who want an accessible oud, carried by fruit rather than resin. It is at its best from autumn through winter, in the evening, and can be worn by both women and men.
With Gaya Green Anfas, Asim Al Qassim captures an Emirati summer in a bottle and the idea that we can mature through adversity.
