A fake word that means fake

FUGAZZI is an Amsterdam-based Dutch house, founded in 2018 by Bram Niessink, whose imagination was sparked during a trip to Egypt with his grandfather. The name comes from fugazi, a 1970s Italian-American slang term meaning “fake,” adopted by youth culture and movie mobsters: spelling it with a double Z makes it a fake word that means fake. The house calls its approach “Storysmelling”. Each formula also contains two patented, odorless plant ingredients whose combination aims to reduce feelings of nervousness and tension. The Extrait line contains 30 to 50% perfume oil, compared to 20% for eaux de parfum.

An opening of oud and grapefruit

Oud is the first thing you smell: smoky, resinous, and unrefined. Grapefruit, mandarin, and blackcurrant surround it with bright citrus notes, so that the opening is both deep and radiant.

A heart of Bulgarian rose and jasmine sambac

Bulgarian rose and jasmine sambac create a rich bouquet, brightened by lily of the valley. Ambergris adds its mineral saltiness and links it to the base.

A base of leather and woods named for their origin

Leather brings animalic notes. Indonesian patchouli, Javanese vetiver, and Indian sandalwood are each identified by their origin, while benzoin adds its vanilla resin and musk provides longevity.

The house's signature

Oud is in the top note. This is the exact opposite of the oriental structure, where the resin always occupies the base because it is heavy and long-lasting: you only reach it after hours of citrus and flowers. Here it is placed at the forefront, and the woods and leather that usually accompany it are relegated to the base. The fragrance is therefore read backward—it begins where others end.
