The man behind Comme des Garçons

Mark Buxton is one of the great contemporary perfumers, and his house bears his name. He created the very first Comme des Garçons fragrance, then 2, 3, Man, White and Cologne, and has created for Givenchy, Versace, Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, Burberry and Le Labo. English, he moved to Germany at eight, trained in Hamburg, settled in Paris, and founded his house in 2008. One anecdote sums him up: at 21 years old, he appears on the German game show Wetten, dass…? betting that he can identify any perfume by smell — he recognizes all five presented to him. His formula: “a perfume should be like a good jazz song — vibrant and harmonious”. The Freedom Collection was composed with David Chieze, his right-hand man; the house claims three signature ingredients common to its four launch fragrances — vetiver, ambergris and davana.

An opening of blackcurrant and wild berry

The blackcurrant opens with its dark, budding acidity, while the wild berry brings a peppery and green facet. Two dark fruits, no citrus: the opening is already chypre.

A heart of rose, tuberose and jasmine

Three flowers call to each other: the jammy rose, the fleshy and almost camphoraceous tuberose, and the indolic jasmine. It is an opulent bouquet, placed without transition on the dark fruit.

A base of oud, vetiver and patchouli

The oud, vetiver and patchouli close the composition. Three ingredients, all woody or earthy, with no sweetness: the base is entirely dry.

The house's gesture

The title is the first word of a sentence. I Want, To Break and Free together form “I Want To Break Free,” the Queen song — the Freedom Collection is entirely inspired by music, and the three fragrances are read like a title, in order. In terms of formula, the construction is equally sharp: three opulent flowers placed on an entirely woody and earthy base, without the slightest softening between the two. The bouquet and the wood touch directly.
