Kalahari Extrême by Noème Paris is a woody, spicy, amber eau de parfum, unisex, created by Emna Doghri. Its base is reduced to two dry resins, without a single musk to soften it — and that is the whole point.

A house that only names inaccessible places

Noème comes from the Greek noema and refers to what lies behind the subconscious: the inaccessible. The house, founded in 2018 by Yassin Karim with the French-Moroccan perfumer Majda Bekkali, applies the principle to the letter — its perfumes bear the names of places that man can only imagine: burning deserts, Mexican crystal caves, ocean depths. Yassin Karim was born in Madagascar to parents who exported spices and flowers, and grew up surrounded by warehouses filled with vanilla pods. Each reference has its watercolor illustration, and the bottle bears a quote attributed to Albert Einstein: "imagination is more important than knowledge".

An opening of pear, anise and orange

The start is fresh and almost edible. The pear brings its juicy flesh, the anise its licorice freshness, the orange its sweet radiance. Three tender materials, which is unexpected for a perfume bearing the name of a desert.

A heart of myrrh, Virginian cedarwood and spices

The landscape changes. The myrrh dries everything out with its bitter resin, the Virginian cedarwood brings its woody dust, the nutmeg, the pink pepper and the cardamom their spicy warmth. The sweetness of the start evaporates.

A base of incense and labdanum

Two materials, and nothing else. Incense and labdanum are two dry resins, and the formula adds no musk, no vanilla, no creamy wood to round off the finish. It is a radical choice, which leaves the perfume arid until the end.

The house's gesture

Almost all woody perfumes close on musks or a vanilla, which brings the trail closer to the skin and makes it comfortable. Kalahari Extrême refuses this comfort: its base counts only two resins, and the pear of the start disappears without leaving a trace. At a house that only names places where man cannot live, it is the desert of southern Africa that is treated here — and the formula draws its literal consequence rather than its image.
