Parfumeur | Emna Doghri
Khalil by Noème Paris is a woody, amber, musky eau de parfum, unisex, created by Emna Doghri. It is the only fragrance from the house to name a person, and its iris appears in the base.
A house that only names inaccessible places
Noème comes from the Greek noema and refers to what lies behind the subconscious: the inaccessible. The house, founded in 2018 by Yassin Karim with French-Moroccan perfumer Majda Bekkali, applies this principle to the letter — its fragrances bear the names of places that man can only imagine: scorching deserts, Mexican crystal caves, oceanic depths. Yassin Karim was born in Madagascar to parents who exported spices and flowers, and grew up surrounded by warehouses filled with vanilla beans. Each fragrance has its own watercolor illustration, and the bottle bears a quote attributed to Albert Einstein: "imagination is more important than knowledge".
An opening of white wood, cardamom, and caramel
The opening is unusual: wood from the very first second, where one would expect citrus. The white wood brings its dry clarity, cardamom its camphor freshness, and caramel a cooked sweetness that prevents the overall composition from being austere.
A heart of cedarwood, patchouli, and tonka bean absolute
The wood thickens. The cedarwood brings its dustiness, patchouli its earthiness, vetiver its smoky root, and tonka bean absolute its almond-like coumarin. It is an entirely woody heart, without a single flower to brighten it.
A base of iris, ambroxan, and modern musks
And this is where the fragrance surprises. The iris — which is almost always placed in the heart for its floral powderiness — appears in the base note. It softens all the wood that precedes it, like a varnish applied last. The ambroxan and modern musks establish the skin effect and longevity.
The house's signature
Two things distinguish Khalil in the house's catalog. First, its name: khalil means "friend" in Arabic, and it is Noème's only title referring to a person, whereas the house claims to only name places beyond reach. Next, its construction: the iris placed in the base rather than the heart, which reverses the usual logic and brings the sweetness last, after an entirely woody trajectory.
For whom, for what occasions?
For those who love dry woody fragrances but want a powdery finish rather than a resinous base. It is an autumn and winter fragrance, wearable day or night, with good longevity and a pronounced skin effect. Khalil Noème Paris will appeal to those seeking a wood softened by iris.
