New Notes is an Italian house published by HIC BEAUTY, in San Giuliano Milanese, on the outskirts of Milan. It defines itself as “a new generation of perfume extracts that transcends the codes of perfumery and breaks down the boundaries of role and gender,” and it follows through on the formula to the letter: its entire catalog consists of perfume extracts, without a single eau de parfum. The house does not credit any perfumer on its bottles.

An opening of cherry, red fruits, and almond

The cherry dominates, ripe and juicy, surrounded by red fruits and a sweet orange that brightens it. Then comes the almond, and it is what makes all the difference: cherry and almond share the same pit facet, that of the amaretto stick. The perfume therefore seems deeper than a simple fruit.

A heart of jasmine, Turkish rose, and ylang-ylang

Three flowers come to soften the fruit without masking it. The jasmine brings its radiance, the Turkish rose — named for its origin — its honeyed depth, the ylang-ylang its creamy and slightly banana-like side. Warm spices pass behind to hold the whole together.

A base of vanilla, tonka bean, and sandalwood

The finish is milky and comforting. The vanilla and the tonka bean establish the sweetness, the sandalwood its creaminess, the amber and the musk the warmth. The vetiver is the surprise: its dry earth prevents the milk from turning into syrup.
