Loudo by Sarah Baker is an oriental fruity woody perfume extract, unisex, created by Chris Maurice. “Deliciously delicious and devilishly woody,” says the house—with natural Laotian oud at its heart.

An oud tinted by the perfumer himself

Sarah Baker is a multidisciplinary artist—film, photography, installation—and the founder of the house, based in an East London studio. She entrusts each fragrance to a different nose: “we collaborate on our fragrances rather than dictating.” Loudo is part of the house’s oud trilogy, signed by Chris Maurice, whose composition she details: “orange blossom, cypriol, and 100% natural Laotian oud and Suyufi agarwood, tinted by the perfumer himself.” Three words for Loudo: “delicious, nostalgic, signature.”

An opening of bergamot, neroli, petitgrain and black cherry

The bergamot and neroli open bright and floral, while the petitgrain—the leaf of the same bitter orange—adds a bitter greenness. The black cherry arrives juicy and candied. The house speaks of “luminous neroli and juicy black cherries.”

A heart of cypriol, orange blossom, white chocolate and Laotian oud

The cypriol, an Indian root with a scent of leather and burnt earth, opens the way to the woods. The orange blossom remains sunny, and the white chocolate brings a milky gourmandness—“white chocolate poured over perfect flowers.” Then the Laotian oud settles in: this is where, and not at the base, it enters.

A base of Suyufi agarwood, musk, amber and vanilla

The Suyufi agarwood—the variety is named—takes over, drier and more leathery. The musk, amber and vanilla round it out. The sillage is warm, long, and remains discernible: it is an oud that can be worn effortlessly.

The house’s signature touch

Two different agarwoods on two levels, and the perfumer tints them himself—that is, he makes his own alcoholic extracts from the raw wood, instead of buying a ready-made base. Few houses of this size do it, and this is what explains that the oud arrives here right from the heart: it is precise enough not to overpower the white chocolate.
