New Notes is an Italian house published by HIC BEAUTY in San Giuliano Milanese, on the outskirts of Milan. It describes itself as “a new generation of extrait de parfum that transcends the conventions of perfumery and breaks down role and gender boundaries,” and it lives up to the name: its entire collection consists of extrait de parfum, with not a single eau de parfum. The house does not credit any perfumer on its bottles.

An opening of saffron, cinnamon, and nutmeg

Saffron opens the fragrance, before anything else: metallic, leathery, and slightly medicinal. Cinnamon, pink pepper, and nutmeg surround it with their dry warmth, while tangerine provides the only fruity brightness at the start—but only in fourth place, where a citrus note would usually lead the way.

A heart of tobacco, labdanum, and benzoin

The heart is resinous and dark. Tobacco brings its dried, slightly honeyed leaf, labdanum its amber resin, and benzoin its balsamic sweetness, almost caramelized. Muguet appears in the middle like a breath, the only clear note in the entire fragrance.

A base of leathery notes, precious woods, and tonka bean

The dry-down extends the opening saffron. The leathery notes bring back its animalic facet, while the precious woods and mossy notes establish the structure, and amber, musk, and tonka bean provide the warmth. As an extrait, this base lasts a long time and leaves a distinct trail.
