Parfumeur | Nejla Barbir
Para Bellum by Maison Eau de Couture is a unisex spicy vanilla amber extrait de parfum, created by Nejla Barbir. One single ingredient per layer, three in total.
A house between France and the Orient
Maison Eau de Couture was founded in 2018 by three fragrance enthusiasts, with a clear focus: to bring together the traditions of French perfumery and the sensory richness of the Orient. It produces extraits de parfum made in France and divides its catalog into several collections, including Trompe-l'œil, which plays with the senses, and Trésors cachés. Its formulas are entrusted to renowned perfumers, foremost among them Nejla Barbir: born in Tunisia, arriving in France in 1980, a doctor in chemistry, she joined Flora Synth in 1987 and worked there alongside Jean-Louis Sieuzac and Dominique Ropion, then remained a senior perfumer at Symrise until 1999 before continuing as an independent, notably for Givenchy.
An opening of vanilla absolute, and nothing else
The vanilla absolute opens alone. It is the most concentrated form of the pod, obtained by solvent extraction: dense, dark, almost liqueur-like. No citrus at the start, no green note to soften the opening.
A heart of tonka bean, and nothing else
The tonka bean takes over alone. It brings almond, cut hay, and a coumarin bitterness that begins to dry out the vanilla without contradicting it.
A base of incense, and nothing else
The incense closes the composition alone. Smoky and peppery resin, it is what definitively cuts through the sweetness and gives the perfume its gravity.
The house's signature
One ingredient per layer: it is the absolute minimum in perfumery, and it is fully embraced. A niche formula usually contains fifteen to thirty ingredients. Here there are three, and each must hold its own layer without the help of any other. The sugar and the smoke face each other without an intermediary, and nothing comes to soften the transition from one to the other — which explains why the perfume changes so distinctly as it wears.
For whom, for what occasions?
For those who love incensed vanillas and are looking for a composition that is clear from start to finish. From autumn to winter, preferably in the evening. Para Bellum by Maison Eau de Couture is the most stripped-down of the six.
