Parfumeur | Dmitry Bortnikov
Manie du Café by Bortnikoff is a niche gourmand, animalic, and woody perfume extract, unisex, created by Dmitry Bortnikov. Released in September 2025.
A Thai house where the founder is also the perfumer
Bortnikoff is based in Thailand, in the heart of the agarwood-producing regions. It was founded by Dmitry Bortnikov, a Russian perfumer who is both the owner and the nose of his brand, and who works with wild Thai ouds, sourcing his materials at the source. He uses genuine animal materials — deer musk, castoreum, hyraceum, ambergris. The catalog is divided into four lines: Entry Level, Main Collection, Colognes and Attars. 50 ml bottle.
An opening of castoreum and vanilla
Castoreum opens the fragrance: leathery, smoky, distinctly animalic. Vanilla immediately adds a veil of sweetness that tempers the intensity without masking it. A brutal opening, softened with a deft touch.
A heart of cedarwood, hyraceum, and tonka bean
Cedarwood brings a dry and smoky elegance, hyraceum adds depth with its resinous and wild facets, and tonka bean balances the whole with an almond-like sweetness.
A base of coffee and deer musk
Freshly roasted coffee finally arrives, dense and enveloping, intertwined with Siberian deer musk, Kabarga, which gives it a noble warmth. The trail is intimate and lasts a very long time.
The house's signature touch
Coffee is at the base, not at the top — and that is the whole point. In an ordinary gourmand fragrance, coffee opens the perfume, then fades away. Here, the formula is reversed: you enter through castoreum, an animalic and leathery material, and coffee only arrives at the end, when everything else has settled in. The title says it all — a manie is not a first impression, it is what you keep coming back to. Second singularity: three animal materials in the same formula, castoreum, hyraceum, and deer musk, which is extremely rare even in niche perfumery. The house summarizes it all in one sentence: an ode to contrasts, wild yet refined.
For whom, for what occasions?
Gourmand, animalic, and woody, this extract is for those who love coffee in perfume and are not afraid of animalic notes. It gives its best from autumn to winter, in the evening, and is equally suitable for both women and men.
With Manie du Café Bortnikoff, Dmitry Bortnikov places coffee at the end of the fragrance rather than at the beginning.
