Melipona by Nectar Olfactif is a powdery, amber vanilla perfume extract, unisex, created by Serge de Oliveira. Its name is that of a bee, and without this bee, vanilla would never have left Mexico.

A house inspired by the world of bees

Nectar Olfactif is a French house founded by David Perrin, a niche perfume and travel enthusiast who has been in the perfume industry for many years. The entire brand is centered around an image it claims: the world of bees foraging on flowers, plants, and fruit trees, and fragrances designed like the nectar they bring back. The formulas are created by perfumers from major fragrance houses — Robertet for five of the six, CPL Aromas for Cerana — and each bottle bears a golden bee seal.

The name of the perfume is that of a Mexican bee, and the story the house tells can be summed up in three sentences. Vanilla originated in Mexico, where the Aztecs used it to soften the bitterness of chocolate. Transplanted elsewhere, it long refused to produce pods: no one knew how to pollinate it outside its original range, not knowing that the Melipona bee was its pollinator. The vanilla in the formula is therefore not just another gourmand note: it is the exact fruit of this bee's work. Melipona belongs to Opus N° 1, the house's first series.
