Parfumeur | Nanako Ogi, Margherita Carini
Musk Colada by OJAR is a fruity-floral musk extrait, unisex, created by Nanako Ogi and Margherita Carini. It uses henna, a material that perfumery almost never uses.
A house born from Dhofar frankincense
OJAR is an Omani house founded by Sheikha Hind Bahwan. The name comes from HOJARI, the most renowned quality of frankincense in the world, harvested in the mountains of Dhofar. The founder summarizes her project in one sentence: “OJAR is a fusion of East and West — I have brought together the best know-how from each region”. The catalog is organized into six collections by material, three of which come from Oman — Dhofar frankincense, Jebel Akhdar rose, and Rustaq honey — complemented by sandalwood, musk, and oud. The formulas are entrusted to perfumers from around the world: Dalia Izem, Gaël Montero, Jordi Fernández, Michel Girard, Nanako Ogi.
An opening of prickly pear, cherry blossom, and nectarine
The prickly pear — the cactus fruit — gives an aqueous and slightly vegetal flesh, far from the usual fig in perfumes. The cherry blossom brings a pink and transparent petal, the nectarine a sweet juice. Three clear materials, without any citrus.
A heart of melon musk, henna, saffron, and mastic
The melon musk — the house specifies that it is Japanese melon — is the flagship material: a milky and sweet fruitiness, very round, which gives its name to the perfume. The henna adds a dry, green, and slightly hay-like note, the saffron its leathery facet, and the mastic — the resin of the lentisk, harvested on the island of Chios — a piney bitterness.
A base of white musk and benzoin
Two materials, no more. The white musk — one of the six founding materials of the house — establishes the skin effect and longevity; the benzoin brings its sweet and vanilla resin. The dry down is short to read but long to wear, as is often the case with musk extraits.
The house's gesture
The title plays on the name of a cocktail, but the formula contains neither pineapple nor coconut: it goes through a Japanese melon, a cactus fig, and a henna. This last material is the real outlier — henna has been used in the Middle East for centuries to dye the skin and hair, but almost never in fine perfumery, where its dry and herbaceous smell is considered difficult. The house presents the perfume as a fearless celebration of strength and sensuality, and marks it as its novelty.
For whom, for what occasions?
For those who love fruity musks and are looking for a gourmand without cooked sugar. It is a spring and summer perfume, wearable day or night, with the longevity of an extrait and a sillage close to the body. Musk Colada OJAR will appeal to those who want a musk that does not look like the others.
