A chef turned perfumer

Lorenzo Pazzaglia is an Italian house born in Cagli, a village in the heart of the Marches. This is where its founder grew up, surrounded by the aromas of his father's restaurant — "I grew up surrounded by the smells of my father's kitchen," he says — before working there himself as a chef. He now lives on the Adriatic coast, but his perfumes are still made in Cagli. A self-taught perfumer, he composes the entire collection himself.

What the set contains

Ten extracts, or 20 ml of perfume. Enough to wear each creation several times before choosing — which matters all the more here, because the house only makes extracts, at a very high concentration: these perfumes last all day and cannot be properly judged on a blotter.

Why start here

It is a cuisine rather than a collection. The formulas name ingredients and techniques not used in perfumery: shortbread, caviar, flambé peach, fior di latte, a barrel. And the same material often appears in several states — coconut as fruit and then as milk, coffee as beans and then roasted, fig as fruit, leaf, and tree. It is this breakdown that must be smelled across several bottles to understand the house.
