A childhood in the Cognac chais

Kilian Paris was founded in 2007 by Kilian Hennessy, a direct descendant of Richard Hennessy, who founded the cognac house in 1765. He grew up among the oak barrels in the family chais — and this fragrance is the one in which that childhood is most directly heard. Before launching his own house, he dedicated his 1995 master's thesis to the semantics of scents, trained under Jacques Cavallier and Thierry Wasser, and then worked for Dior, Armani, Paco Rabanne, and Alexander McQueen. The catalog is organized into five fragrance families: The Liquors, The Narcotics, The Cellars, The Fresh, and The Smokes. This fragrance belongs to The Liquors.

A cognac opening

Cognac opens the composition alone. No citrus, no spice to introduce it: the eau-de-vie arrives in the first second, warm, woody, with its characteristic burn.

A heart of oak and cinnamon

Oak takes over — it is the wood of the barrel, the one in which the eau-de-vie aged. Cinnamon brings the warm, dry spice that naturally extends the alcohol.

A base of tonka bean and sandalwood

Tonka bean brings back almond and cut hay, while sandalwood brings its milky creaminess. The base softens without ever leaving the register of wood and alcohol.

The house's signature

The name is a distiller's technical term. The angels' share refers to the fraction of eau-de-vie that evaporates from the barrel during aging — a few percent per year, lost in the air of the chai. The fragrance reconstructs exactly that: the cognac, then the wood of the barrel, then what remains in the atmosphere. With only five ingredients, this makes each stage perfectly legible.
