FUGAZZI is a Dutch house from Amsterdam, founded in 2018 by Bram Niessink, whose imagination was sparked during a trip to Egypt with his grandfather. The name comes from fugazi, a 1970s Italo-American slang word meaning "fake", adopted by youth culture and movie mobsters: writing it with a double Z makes it a fake word that means fake. The house calls its approach "Storysmelling". Each formula also contains two patented odorless plant ingredients, whose combination aims to reduce feelings of nervousness and tension. The Extrait line contains 30 to 50% perfume oil, compared to 20% for eaux de parfum.

An opening of ginger and marigold

Ginger opens spicy and fresh. Marigold — the French marigold — brings a fairly rare green and herbal bitterness, and black tea a tannic dryness. None of these three ingredients hints at the fruit that follows.

The oud is named for its origin: Assafi. It is a detail that matters, because almost all "ouds" on the market are synthetic accords with no declarable origin. Naming a specific grade commits the house. The second choice is contrast: a bright tropical fruit set on a deep resin, with the bitter marigold at the top to prevent the whole thing from turning into fruit juice.
