Parfumeur | Jérôme Epinette
Raku by Les Bains Guerbois is an amber, musky, woody unisex eau de parfum, created by Jérôme Épinette. A milky fig against dry sage, on mineral cedar.
A single address, one hundred and forty years of history
It all started at 7 rue du Bourg-l'Abbé, in Paris. In 1885, Auguste Guerbois opened the capital's most luxurious private bath, frequented by Manet, Monet, Renoir, Zola and Proust. In 1978, the venue became Les Bains Douches, the Parisian equivalent of Studio 54. In 2015, Jean-Pierre Marois, the heir to the venue, transformed it into a five-star hotel, before resurrecting the perfume house in 2016. The catalogue follows two lines: "A date, a story" (2018), where each perfume corresponds to a year in the venue's history, and "Forms & Materials" (2022), an exploration of the building itself. Raku belongs to this second collection, alongside Oud Laqué and Damier.
An opening of lemon and black pepper
Lemon opens with a clean citrus note, while black pepper immediately brings a dry bite. Only two materials: the opening is short and unadorned.
A heart of fig and clary sage
Fig brings the milk of the stem and the flesh of the fruit, green and creamy at the same time. Clary sage answers it with a dry, amber, and slightly smoky herb. The contrast is direct: wet against dry.
A base of Texas cedar and ambroxan
Texas cedar brings a wood that is harder and more mineral than Atlas cedar, ambroxan its salty diffusion, and white musk its longevity. The base is dry, almost stony.
The house's signature
The name comes from a ceramic technique, and the formula reproduces its principle. Japanese raku consists of removing the piece from the kiln while red-hot and cooling it abruptly, which cracks the glaze. The perfume does the same thing: the milky fig and dry sage collide at the heart without mixing, and the mineral cedar of the base gives the texture of terracotta. One form, one material: that is literally the program of the collection.
For whom, for what occasions?
Amber, musky, and woody, this eau de parfum is for those who love figs and dry woods, and are looking for a textural composition rather than a narrative one. From spring to autumn, by day. It is the most refined in the catalogue.
With Raku Les Bains Guerbois, two materials collide without ever mixing.
