Parfumeur | Christian Carbonnel
Salam by Anfas is a niche floral, amber and citrus perfume extract, unisex, created by master perfumer Christian Carbonnel. In Arabic, salam means peace — it is also the word used to greet one another.
A house where every fragrance begins with an Arabic word
Anfas (أنفاس) means “breaths” in Arabic, and the house’s theme is Arab hospitality — that way of welcoming others that, according to its founder, is something you can breathe in the Emirates. It was founded in the United Arab Emirates by Asim Al Qassim, an architect by training and the first certified Emirati perfumer. His method is stated plainly: it begins with an Arabic word, traces back to the emotion it carries, and then translates that into a fragrance formula — fragrances that are not inspired by Arab culture, but made from it. His architect’s eye is visible in the bottle: the rim is adorned with palm leaves depicting the sun, a flower opens in the centre of the cap like a gift presented on a tray, and each bottle features an Arabic engraving. This one is signed by Christian Carbonnel, the Spanish master perfumer who created Erba Pura for Xerjoff.
An opening of mandarin and bergamot
Mandarin opens round and sweet, immediately sharpened by bergamot, which is greener and more bitter. Two citrus fruits, nothing else: the opening is clean, luminous, and free of artifice.
A heart of amber, jasmine and magnolia
Amber brings a round warmth to the heart from the outset — which is unusual — while jasmine and magnolia open up a white bouquet, one solar and creamy, the other more lemony and transparent.
A base of sandalwood and musk
Creamy sandalwood and musk close the composition like a second skin. The trail is soft, clean, and lasts a long time without ever imposing itself.
The house’s signature approach
Seven ingredients, not one more. Salam is by far the shortest formula in the Anfas catalogue — two citrus fruits, three flowers, one amber, one wood and one musk — while the house’s other creations feature ten, twelve or fifteen. This simplicity is the theme itself: the house describes Salam as the moment when two people recognise each other at first sight, the energy of the first few seconds followed by a profound calm. A heavier formula would have told the opposite story. Placing amber in the heart, rather than in the base as is done everywhere else, serves exactly this purpose: the warmth arrives early, and then everything settles.
For whom and for what occasions?
Floral, amber and citrus, this perfume extract is for those seeking a clear and soothing fragrance, suitable for both the office and family occasions. It can be worn all year round, especially during the day, by both women and men.
With Salam Anfas, Christian Carbonnel bottles the word used to greet one another — and the peace it promises.
