Parfumeur | Christian Carbonnel & Dmitry Bortnikov
Spanish Honey by Bortnikoff is an amber, floral, and gourmand niche perfume extract, unisex, co-created by Dmitry Bortnikov and Spanish master perfumer Christian Carbonnel. It belongs to the Entry Level collection.
A Thai house where the founder is also the perfumer
Bortnikoff is based in Thailand, in the heart of the agarwood-producing regions. It was founded by Dmitry Bortnikov, a Russian perfumer who is both the owner and the nose of his brand, and who works with wild Thai ouds, sourcing his materials at the source. The catalog is divided into four lines: Entry Level, Main Collection, Colognes, and Attars. In October 2025, at the BeautyWorld Middle East show in Dubai, he presented a joint collection with Spanish perfumer Christian Carbonnel — the nose of Erba Pura for Xerjoff — called Entry Level: four lighter and brighter fragrances, where animalic notes are subtle. An entry point into the house, at a more accessible price. All in perfume extract, 50 ml bottle.
An opening of bergamot and honey
Bergamot opens bright and slightly bitter, and honey arrives immediately behind: thick, waxy, slightly animalic. Only two materials, and the theme is set.
A heart of jasmine, iris, benzoin, ylang-ylang, and oud
Jasmine and ylang-ylang open a white and sunny bouquet, while iris adds its cool powder and benzoin its vanilla resin. In the middle, oud — placed in the heart rather than at the base, making it immediately noticeable.
A base of vanilla, amber, musk, and sandalwood
Vanilla and amber prolong the warmth, sandalwood rounds it out with creaminess, and musk settles it on the skin. The trail is soft, long, and draws closer to the body as the hours pass.
The house's signature touch
Honey in the top notes, which is rarely done. Honey is a heavy, thick, and slow material: perfumery almost always reserves it for the base, where it has time to unfold. Here it opens the fragrance, right behind a bergamot, and imposes its waxy texture from the very first second. Oud follows the same inverse logic: placed in the heart rather than at the base, it reveals itself instead of waiting its turn. This double inversion is what makes the fragrance immediately noticeable — exactly the purpose of the Entry Level collection. It is also the only one of the four Entry Level fragrances to contain oud, and the one that generated the most buzz in Dubai: according to Dmitry Bortnikov, it was the new release that visitors to the show bought first.
For whom, for what occasions?
Amber, floral, and gourmand, this extract is for those who want to discover oud through sweetness rather than smoke. It gives its best from autumn to winter, by day as well as by night, and is equally suitable for women and men.
With Spanish Honey Bortnikoff, Christian Carbonnel and Dmitry Bortnikov present honey in the opening and oud in full light.
