Parfumeur | Michał Gilbert Lach
Vanilla Black Pepper by Bohoboco is a niche vanilla, spicy and floral eau de parfum, unisex, created by Michał Gilbert Lach. It is the house's very first fragrance.
A house that names its fragrances after their ingredients
Bohoboco is a Polish house based in Warsaw. It was born in 2009 as a fashion brand, founded by designers Michał Gilbert Lach and Kamil Owczarek. A first fragrance was released in 2012, before the collection was launched in 2016 — a project in which Lach, having worked in hairdressing, then makeup, and finally fashion design, says he found his true calling. The house's signature lies in its naming convention: each fragrance simply bears the name of two or three of its ingredients, without a story or character. Sea Salt Caramel, Vanilla Black Pepper, Wild Carrot Oud — and even provocative names like Magic Mushrooms or Polish Potatoes. The first compositions were created in Grasse, and the house has been awarded by the Fragrance Foundation UK, Vogue Beauty and Elle Style. Everything is available as a 50 ml eau de parfum, unisex.
An opening of orange blossom and oleander
Orange blossom opens brightly and honeyed, accompanied by oleander — a green and slightly almond-like flower. Just two ingredients, and a distinctly floral start for a fragrance that promises pepper.
A heart of heliotrope, olibanum, rose and nutmeg
Heliotrope brings its powdery almond sweetness, olibanum its smoky resin, rose its elegance and nutmeg its spicy warmth. The fragrance thickens and becomes balsamic.
A base of black pepper, vanilla, cedar and white musk
Black pepper and vanilla finally arrive together: the biting against the creamy. Cedarwood and white musk hold them together. The result is more like slightly sweet incense than dessert.
The house's signature touch
The fragrance that launched the house — and a toxic flower inside. It was with Vanilla Black Pepper that the Bohoboco line began, born from what Lach calls a metaphysical experience: the moment he understood what art was and decided to dedicate his life to it. Two details of the formula deserve attention. First, oleander, a plant known to be toxic and almost absent from perfumery — the brand's ingredient list confirms its presence. Then the construction: unlike most fragrances from the house, the two ingredients in the title are brought together in the same layer, both in the base — pepper and vanilla truly meet, instead of facing each other from afar.
For whom, for what occasions?
Vanilla, spicy and floral, this eau de parfum is for those seeking a dry, resinous vanilla, without the gourmand sweetness. It can be worn all year round, by day or by night, without distinction of gender.
With Vanilla Black Pepper Bohoboco, Michał Gilbert Lach has opened up his entire collection.
