The Nero Collection

Viola belongs to the Nero Collection, five fragrances in 75 ml lacquered black glass bottles, along with Aira, Cavatina, Diva and Farsa. Viola is the viola—the dark, low-pitched string instrument of the orchestra, not the flower: Sospiro names its fragrances using musical vocabulary, and this is the only one in the collection to bear the name of an instrument.

An opening of lemon, clary sage, bergamot and pepper

The opening combines lemon and bergamot with clary sage, a dry and slightly ambered herb, sharpened by pepper. A crisp and sharp opening, very clear for a collection billed as dark.

A heart of ambergris, rosemary, nutmeg and incense

The heart takes a turn: ambergris, camphorous rosemary, grated nutmeg and resinous incense. This is where the light of the opening fades, and it is the most interesting transition in the composition.

A base of cedarwood, sandalwood, vetiver, oakmoss and amber

The base brings together two woods, the smoky root of vetiver, deep oakmoss and amber. The trail becomes dry, mineral and long-lasting.

Viola is the only one of the five to contain no oud—it is the oakmoss that plays the role of the dark wood.
