Parfumeur | Jean-Michel Duriez
Ambre Ananas by Maison Berliner is a unisex amber, fruity, woody extrait de parfum created by Jean-Michel Duriez. Four resins on the same level, beneath a roasted pineapple.
Four expressions of character, signed by a Master Perfumer
Maison Berliner is a Parisian niche perfume house, co-founded with Jean-Michel Duriez. And that is where it all lies: Duriez is a Master Perfumer, a title he earned by training two young perfumers himself. Trained at the ISIPCA, he was the house perfumer for Jean Patou, Rochas, and Yohji Yamamoto before founding his own house. He created the entire Berliner collection — Pomme Tonka, Mûre Iris, Ambre Ananas, and Rose Litchi —, composed with Givaudan materials.
An opening of roasted pineapple, caramel, and mango
Roasted pineapple opens the composition — the house specifies the cooking method, grilled slices, and it makes all the difference: raw pineapple is tart and green, roasted pineapple becomes caramelized, sweet, juicy, and yet almost fresh. Caramel and mango extend this sunny opening.
A heart of Egyptian geranium, patchouli, and coriander
Egyptian geranium holds the heart: the origin is specified, and it is the one that gives geranium its rosest facet. Patchouli brings the earth, coriander a peppery freshness, and bergamot a citrus reminder that prevents the fruit from becoming too heavy.
A base of opoponax, Tolu balsam, and incense
Opoponax, Tolu balsam, incense, and rockrose resin correspond on the same level. Ambergris, sandalwood, cinnamon, vanilla, and fruity musks complete the ambergris accord, which the house describes as vanilla-like, spicy, woody, and deep.
The house's approach
Four resins on the same level: opoponax, Tolu balsam, incense, and rockrose resin. This is an amber built the old-fashioned way, material by material, whereas most houses settle for a ready-made amber accord, delivered ready to use. The house does not hide it: it speaks of "the centuries-old accord of ambergris, reconstituted by the greatest houses" — and these four resins are precisely what it is reconstituted with. Opoponax, sweet myrrh, and Tolu balsam are materials that few houses still name today. It is the vocabulary of a Master Perfumer, and here it is used beneath an exotic fruit, which is the opposite of a reflex.
For whom, for what occasions?
For those who love resinous ambers and are looking for a sunny fruitiness that lasts until evening. From autumn to winter, by day as well as by night. The house's advice: natural fibers, wool or cotton, carry the scent of an extrait better than synthetic materials. Ambre Ananas by Maison Berliner is the sunniest of the four.
