Parfumeur | Céline Perdriel
Ambre Papier by Atelier Materi is a niche perfume extract that is spicy, amber, and woody, unisex, and created by perfumer Céline Perdriel. The material at the heart of the composition is Siam benzoin.
A house where each fragrance explores a single material
“Materi” means “material” in Breton — the house defines itself as the workshop of the material. It was founded in 2019 by Véronique Le Bihan, originally from Brittany, after ten years spent developing fragrances and cosmetics for other brands. Passionate about perfume, architecture, and design, she views these three disciplines through the same lens: the transformation of the material. This principle is upheld throughout the collection: each fragrance explores a single raw material in depth. The bottle extends this idea: midnight blue, and for the extracts, a golden cap handcrafted using ancestral techniques, in homage to the Breton golden hour. The perfume extracts are concentrated at 30%.
An opening of black pepper, Jamaican pepper, and blood mandarin
Madagascar black pepper essence opens dry and vibrant, Jamaican pepper extract — allspice — adds its spicy warmth, and Italian blood mandarin brings juiciness and a slight bitterness. A spicy, bold opening, without the slightest sweetness.
A heart of jasmine, myrrh, mate, and saffron
Saffron extract asserts itself, leathery and almost electric. Brazilian mate absolute answers it, green and tea-like, myrrh essence brings a resinous bitterness, and jasmine absolute remains the only true flower in the formula.
A base of benzoin resin, Haitian vetiver, and tonka bean
The Siam benzoin resin finally unfolds, round, balsamic, and vanilla-like. Haitian vetiver essence gives it its earthy depth, and tonka bean absolute its almond sweetness. At a 30% concentration, the trail is long and awakens as the hours pass.
The house's signature
Armenian paper in a bottle. Ambre Papier does not tell a generic amber story: it reinterprets a specific Armenian tradition, that of burning benzoin resin to perfume interiors — the famous Armenian paper, that booklet of soaked sheets that one sets on fire. Hence the name, and hence the choice of Siam benzoin harvested in the high mountains of Laos, a rare material, like a unique subject. The perfumer herself says it: its depth needed to be “awakened” by confronting it with black pepper, pepper, and the warmth of saffron, rather than leaving it in its vanilla comfort.
For whom, for what occasions?
Spicy, amber, and woody, this perfume extract is for those who love resins and dry spices, far from sweet ambers. It gives its best from autumn to winter, in the evening, worn equally well by women and men.
With Ambre Papier Atelier Materi, Céline Perdriel transforms a century-old domestic ritual into high perfumery.
