Parfumeur | Maurice Roucel
Musc Ravageur by Frédéric Malle is a musky, vanilla and spicy eau de parfum, unisex, created by Maurice Roucel in 2000. Nine base notes, and a lavender top note to deceive the listener.
The perfume publisher
Frédéric Malle is not a perfumer: he is a publisher. His model, he formulates it himself: creating perfumes like Gallimard publishes novels. He therefore commissions his fragrances from great noses without budget or deadline constraints, puts their name on the bottle — an unprecedented gesture at the opening of the house in 2000 — and, above all, leaves them their royalties. Nine perfumers responded to the first invitation, and Musc Ravageur is part of these very first editions. Malle is the third generation of a dynasty: his grandfather Serge Heftler-Louiche founded Christian Dior Perfumes, his mother directed its creation for thirty years, and the filmmaker Louis Malle was his uncle.
An opening of lavender and tangerine
Lavender opens the composition, clean and camphorous. Tangerine, bergamot and neroli brighten it, coriander adds its green and peppery note. Nothing, at this moment, announces what follows.
A heart of cinnamon and cloves
Cinnamon and clove bring out the spicy heat. Iris root brings its powder, rose and osmanthus — a flower with an apricot and leather scent — complete the transition to the base.
A base of nine ingredients
Musk and animal notes dominate, enveloped in vanilla, tonka bean and amber. Sandalwood, guaiac, cedar and patchouli form the woody foundation. It is this that you wear for hours.
The house's gesture
A lavender top note on an animal musk. The lure is calculated: lavender is the most reassuring ingredient in men's perfumery, associated with eau de toilette and clean laundry. It occupies the first few minutes, then gives way to a frankly carnal base. The title does not lie, the opening does — and that is precisely the subject of the perfume.
For whom, for what occasions?
Musky, vanilla and spicy, this eau de parfum is for those who love warm musks and are not afraid of animal notes. From autumn to winter, in the evening. It is one of the house's classics, and it is available in 50 and 100 ml.
With Musc Ravageur Frédéric Malle, the most reassuring ingredient in perfumery serves as a lure.
