The desert, the silence and three ouds

SANTI BURGAS presents itself as "an avant-garde and alternative niche perfume brand, born in the heart of the Mediterranean in 2008". The formulas are born in Torroella de Montgrí, in Empordà, in a former rice dryer that the house calls its "ant colony". About this perfume, it writes: "You and I alone, covered by a blanket of stars in the desert, surrounded by silence." It insists on one point: the ouds used are natural, and there are three of them.

An opening of Madagascar clove, gurjun balsam and cypriol

The Madagascar clove opens warm, spicy and slightly numbing. The gurjun balsam — this Southeast Asian resin, woody and smoky — and the cypriol, an Indian root with a scent of leather and burnt earth, accompany it. No citrus: the perfume goes directly into the wood.

A heart of cedarwood, iris root and guaiac wood

The cedarwood brings its dryness, the guaiac wood a sweet and tarry smoke. Between the two, the iris root lays down a cold powder — it is what prevents the composition from being only austere, and gives it its third family.

A base of Suyufi oud, Laos oud, Bangladesh oud and Australian sandalwood

Three agarwoods, three terroirs. The Suyufi oud, which the house names the variety; the Laos oud, darker and more animalic; the Bangladesh oud, more fruity and leathery. The Australian sandalwood rounds them off with a woody cream. It is this base of four materials that justifies the positioning of the perfume.

Stacking three ouds is not an exaggeration: each origin has its own scent, and the house superimposes them like a painter superimposes three browns. Where most houses write "oud" without further specification, this one names a variety and two countries — which is, in essence, the only way to prove that an oud is natural.
