Parfumeur | Dominique Ropion
Portrait of a Lady by Frédéric Malle is a floral, spicy, amber unisex eau de parfum, created by Dominique Ropion in 2010. A concentration of rose and patchouli that almost no house can afford.
The perfume publisher
Frédéric Malle is not a perfumer: he is a publisher. His model, which he formulated himself: creating perfumes as Gallimard publishes novels. He therefore commissions his fragrances from great noses without budget or time constraints, puts their name on the bottle — an unprecedented move at the opening of the house in 2000 — and, above all, leaves them their royalties: they are not service providers, they are authors. Nine perfumers responded to the first invitation. Malle is the third generation of a dynasty: his grandfather Serge Heftler-Louiche founded Christian Dior Perfumes, his mother ran its creation for thirty years, and the filmmaker Louis Malle was his uncle. Dominique Ropion is the creator of four of the twelve references in our selection.
An opening of rose and red fruits
Rose is present from the first second, accompanied by raspberry, blackcurrant, and red fruits. Clove and cinnamon immediately spice it up: there is no citrus to call you in, you go straight into the flower.
A heart of Turkish rose and patchouli
Turkish rose unfolds fully, backed by a massive patchouli. Incense brings the smoke, sandalwood and ylang-ylang the creaminess. The rose-patchouli couple is the heart of the matter.
A base of benzoin and ambergris
Benzoin and amber establish the resin, ambergris its mineral salinity. Cedar, musk, and vanilla complete a dense base, which makes the perfume last a very long time on the skin.
The house's gesture
A concentration of rose and patchouli that the industry would deem unreasonable. This is exactly what the editorial model allows: no budget or deadlines imposed on the perfumer. Dominique Ropion therefore uses these two materials at concentrations that most houses cannot afford, and the result is a sillage of rare power. The perfume has become one of the most recognizable roses on the market.
For whom, for what occasions?
Floral, spicy, and amber, this eau de parfum is for anyone looking for a rose of great stature and who embraces a marked sillage. From autumn to winter, in the evening, one spray is enough. Available in 50 and 100 ml.
With Portrait of a Lady Frédéric Malle, a perfumer composes without a budget limit — and it shows.
