Parfumeur | Rosendo Mateu
N°7 by Rosendo Mateu is a woody floral vanilla eau de parfum, unisex, created by Rosendo Mateu. Patchouli, oud and vanilla: a bright floral swallowed by dark woods.
The father, the son and the materials
Rosendo Mateu entered the perfume industry in 1968 and spent forty years at the Spanish group Puig, composing for Nina Ricci, Paco Rabanne and Carolina Herrera. In 2010, after forty-five years dedicated to perfume, Puig awarded him the title of Master Perfumer. In 2015, he founded the house that bears his name in Barcelona with his son Joan. Regarding N°7, the house says exactly this: "the culmination of the expertise of a Master Perfumer, the innovative approach of his son, and the meticulous selection of the best raw materials". It is the only creation in the collection that it presents as a joint effort.
An opening of rose petals
A single material, and deliberately for a short time. Rose petals open the perfume on a delicate floral note which, the house says, "passes seamlessly into the heart of the perfume". It initially seems classic, and that is exactly what makes what follows interesting.
A heart of jasmine, spices, animalic notes and Indonesian patchouli
Jasmine takes center stage, surrounded by spices and what the house calls "intriguing animalic undertones". Then Indonesian patchouli asserts itself: earthy, camphoraceous, damp. The composition changes temperature without ever breaking.
A base of Lao oud, Thai oud, Madagascar vanilla absolute and Siamese benzoin
Two ouds overlap, one from Laos, the other from Thailand — dark, leathery, almost medicinal. The Madagascar vanilla absolute rounds them off without extinguishing them, the Siamese benzoin brings its balsamic resin. The sillage is rich, tenacious, and can be heard from afar.
The house's touch
Patchouli is treated here as a rare material, and the house details the process: the leaves are "dried, fermented then distilled" in the Indonesian fields, before a molecular distillation that removes its heaviest facets. This is what explains that this patchouli never smells like the back of an old closet, the usual flaw of the material.
For whom, for what occasions?
For those who love oriental woods and perfumes that tell an evolution rather than an accord. Autumn, winter, evenings. It is one of the two most assertive creations in the collection, along with N°4. Unisex, at 20% concentration.
