The perfume publisher

Frédéric Malle is not a perfumer: he is a publisher. His model, he formulates it himself: creating perfumes like Gallimard publishes novels. He therefore commissions his fragrances from great noses without budget or time constraints, puts their name on the bottle — an unprecedented gesture at the opening of the house in 2000 — and, above all, leaves them their royalties: they are not service providers, they are authors. Malle is the third generation of a dynasty: his grandfather Serge Heftler-Louiche founded Christian Dior Perfumes, his mother led its creation for thirty years, and the filmmaker Louis Malle was his uncle.

An opening of Turkish rose and saffron

The Turkish rose opens in abundance — the house speaks of a real ocean of rose — and the saffron immediately warms it with its spicy, slightly leathery facet.

A 100% natural oud heart

The heart rests on a single material: oud, which Frédéric Malle announces as 100% natural. Smoky, resinous, deep, it is dosed without restraint; it is what gives the perfume its density and longevity.

A base of olibanum and sandalwood

Olibanum brings its resinous and lemony smoke, sandalwood its creamy sweetness. The two materials envelop the oud and soften its edges without diminishing its power.

The house's gesture

Real oud, and in quantity. Many so-called "oud" perfumes rely on reconstructed accords; here, the list of ingredients explicitly mentions Aquilaria agallocha oil, the tree from which oud wood is extracted. The Night belongs to the Desert Gems collection, which the house dedicates to the great materials of the Middle East — oud, rose, incense and amber — and which it presents as the most radical work.
