Vanilla Fragrances

Vanilla fragrances: the most universally appealing, and most complex, ingredient

Vanilla is the fruit of an orchid, the only species of its kind to produce an edible pod. Its production is exceptionally labor-intensive: manual pollination flower by flower, followed by several months of blanching, steaming, and drying before the vanillin develops. Madagascar and the Sambava region supply most of it, which explains prices that are sometimes higher than those of silver.

In perfumery, vanilla is rarely alone. It serves as a foundation: combined with resins, it becomes amber, with cacao it becomes gourmand, with sandalwood it becomes milky, and with tobacco it becomes dark. Niche vanilla is almost always drier and woodier than the sweet vanilla favored by the general public.
