Pomme Tonka by Maison Berliner is a spicy amber gourmand perfume extract, unisex, created by Jean-Michel Duriez. It is the house's founding creation, launched in November 2024.

Four expressions of character, signed by a Master Perfumer

Maison Berliner is a Parisian niche perfume house, co-founded with Jean-Michel Duriez. And that is where it all lies: Duriez is a Master Perfumer, a title he earned by training two young perfumers himself. Trained at the ISIPCA, he was the house perfumer for Jean Patou, Rochas and Yohji Yamamoto before founding his own house. He created the entire Berliner collection — Pomme Tonka, Mûre Iris, Ambre Ananas and Rose Litchi —, composed with Givaudan materials.

An opening of Iranian apple essence and bergamot

Iranian apple essence opens the composition, crisp and tart, and bergamot gives it its sharpness. Two materials, not one more: the opening is short and direct.

A heart of saffron, cinnamon and coconut

Saffron holds the heart, a leathery spice and slightly bitter. Cinnamon extends it, coconut brings the exotic milky note, while rose and geranium essence slip a floral transparency under the gourmand.

A base of tonka bean, chocolate and cocoa

Tonka bean establishes the almond and cut hay, chocolate and cocoa extract the rich bitterness, caramel the cooked sugar. Vanilla, amber and patchouli close it with a warm structure — this is the "amber structure" spoken of by the house.

The house's approach

The apple is named by its origin: Iranian apple essence. It is rare, and it deserves to be mentioned. The apple is almost always an anonymous synthetic accord, without origin and without variety. Naming it commits the house to the material. The other decision lies in the saffron placed right in the heart: a dry and bitter spice in the middle of a composition of caramel, chocolate and cocoa, it is precisely what prevents the whole from sinking into sweetness.
