Hesperidic Fragrances
Hesperidic fragrances: the citrus family
The term hesperidic comes from the Hesperides, those nymphs of Greek mythology who guarded a garden of golden fruit. It refers to all compositions built around citrus fruits: bergamot, lemon and mandarin, orange and grapefruit, lime, yuzu and citron.
These essences are obtained by cold-pressed zest, a mechanical process that preserves their brightness. Their flaw is well known: they are highly volatile and evaporate within a few dozen minutes. The perfumer's entire art consists of prolonging this brightness by fixing it on musks, vetiver or woods.
What you need to know about hesperidic fragrances
- Extraction by cold-pressing the zest, not by distillation
