Chypre Perfumes
Chypre fragrances: a family born in 1917
Chypre is not a raw material but a structure, born in 1917 with François Coty's Chypre. Its architecture is precise: a citrus opening with bergamot, a floral heart, and above all, a base built on oakmoss, patchouli, and labdanum.
It is this tension between a luminous opening and an earthy, bitter base that creates the chypre signature. The family was deeply affected by regulatory restrictions on oakmoss, which led perfumers to recreate the effect in other ways. Contemporary chypre fragrances are therefore softer and fruitier than the great classics of the 20th century.
What characterizes a chypre fragrance
- An identifiable structure: bergamot, floral, oakmoss, and patchouli
- A deliberate contrast between freshness and earthy bitterness
- Softer modern versions, due to the oakmoss
- Fruity variations with raspberry and blackcurrant
A family for lovers of sophistication, to be explored alongside our woody and leather fragrances.
