Gourmand Fragrances
Gourmand fragrances: a family born in 1992
The gourmand family is the youngest in perfumery. It truly emerged in the early 1990s, when the use of ethyl maltol—that cotton candy-scented molecule—paved the way for overtly edible compositions. In thirty years, it has become one of the most sought-after, and niche perfumery has considerably enriched it.
A successful gourmand fragrance is never solely sweet. The sweetness is balanced by bitterness—coffee, dark chocolate—by salt, by spices, or by a woody base such as patchouli. It is this balance that distinguishes a niche gourmand fragrance from one that is simply sweet.
How to navigate gourmand fragrances
- Roasted gourmands: coffee and cocoa, bitter and intense
- Sweet gourmands: caramel and honey, enveloping
- Dry gourmands: almond and pistachio, powdery and milky
- Fruity gourmands: cherry, raspberry, peach
