Oriental Perfumes
Oriental fragrances: the family of rich, long-lasting scents
The oriental family refers to compositions based on warm, resinous ingredients: vanilla, amber, balsamic resins, spices, precious woods, and oud. The term largely encompasses that of amber, and some in the industry now prefer this latter term, considered more descriptive and less geographical.
What defines an oriental fragrance is its depth. Where a citrus fragrance shines immediately and then fades, an oriental fragrance unfolds in successive layers over many hours. The trail is dense, the longevity often exceeds a day, and the scent on clothing can last for several days.
How to navigate oriental fragrances
- Vanilla and amber orientals: the most enveloping and sweet
- Spicy orientals: saffron, cinnamon, cloves
- Woody orientals: oud, sandalwood, and resins
- Leathery orientals: leather and tobacco, the darkest
